Turning 65 comes with big decisions. When you become eligible for Medicare at 65, timely enrollment in a Medicare Supplement plan is crucial, and understanding the enrollment process helps you avoid costly mistakes. As a Medicare broker and financial analyst, I’ve spent years helping clients navigate the confusing maze of Medicare Supplement plans (also known as Medigap). But now, I had to make that decision for myself.

So, what plan did I choose? I went with Physicians Mutual’s Plan G. But more importantly, I’ll explain why—because the “why” is more valuable than the “what.”

Watch the full video here to see my full decision process and learn how to protect yourself from costly Medicare mistakes.

    Introduction to Medicare Supplement Insurance

Navigating Medicare can be overwhelming, especially when it comes to understanding what’s covered—and what isn’t. That’s where Medicare Supplement Insurance, or Medigap, comes in. Medigap policies are designed to fill the gaps left by Original Medicare, helping beneficiaries manage out-of-pocket costs like deductibles, coinsurance, and copayments for covered services. These plans are offered by private insurance companies, but the benefits are standardized by the federal government, so you know exactly what you’re getting with each plan type.

With several Medigap plans to choose from, each offering different levels of coverage and cost sharing, it’s important to compare Medigap plans carefully. Some plans cover more services and have higher premiums, while others may have lower monthly costs but leave you responsible for more of your medical bills. Medigap policies typically pay their share of coinsurance only after you’ve met your Medicare deductible, unless your policy specifically covers that deductible as well. By taking the time to compare Medigap options, you can find a plan that fits your healthcare needs and budget, ensuring you’re protected from unexpected costs as you enjoy your Medicare benefits.

The Hidden Risks in Today’s Medigap Market

The Medicare Supplement market has become a battleground of price wars. Since all Medigap plans are standardized in terms of coverage, companies often compete on price alone, ignoring long-term sustainability. This business approach may seem to save consumers money in the short term, but it can end up costing them more over time due to unexpected, subsatantial rate hikes.

Here’s the problem:  This “race to the bottom” leads to unsustainable pricing, short-term discounts, and eventually massive rate hikes—some as high as 40%–60% in 2025.

Please see my video titled “Huge Medicare Supplement Rate Increases” for an important deep dive into the real cause of substantial price increases in Medicare supplement plans.

    What Makes Physicians Mutual Different?

Instead of competing on price, Physicians Mutual competes on price stability and added value. They actively update their employees on how they avoid risky discount tactics and offer benefits you won’t find elsewhere, like:

When comparing Physicians Mutual to other providers such as Humana and Aetna, it’s important to note that while these companies offer standard Medigap policies and Medicare supplements, Physicians Mutual stands out for its innovative approach and unique benefits. Like other providers, Physicians Mutual offers a medigap policy designed to fill the gaps in Original Medicare coverage, but their focus on added value and price stability sets them apart in the Medicare supplements market.

What Is the Innovative Plan G?

Physicians Mutual’s Innovative Plan G is a unique version of standard Plan G that:

    • The Physician’s Mutual is a regular Medigap Plan G with rider that makes it into a high deductible Plan G until you reach the third January 01 of owning the plan. At that point, the rider dissapears and you have a regular Plan G.

    • Automatically converts to regular Plan G at the start of the new calendar year, but the monthly premium stays at the Innovative Plan G rate. It does not increase when benefit increase.

    • Keeps your premium at the lower rate for the life of your plan, even after the benefits increase.

After the initial period, you enjoy the rest of your coverage at the same lower premium. These features are applicable only to the Innovative Plan G.

Cost and Discounts of Medicare Supplement

When it comes to Medicare Supplement Insurance, cost is important, but it’s not always straightforward. The monthly premium you pay for your Medigap plan can vary widely depending on the insurance company, the specific plan you choose, and even your location. For example, Medigap Plan G is known for its comprehensive coverage, but it typically comes with a higher premium. On the other hand, plans like Plan N offer lower premiums but may require you to pay copayments for certain office visits or emergency room visits.

Many insurance companies offer discounts to help make coverage more affordable. You might find a household discount if more than one beneficiary in your home enrolls, or a discount for setting up automatic premium payments.

Innovative plans, such as Physicians Mutual’s Innovative Plan G, provide another way to save, offering lower premiums in exchange for a deductible during the first three calendar years, before converting to full coverage at the same lower rate. As you compare Medigap plans, be sure to weigh the benefits offered against the costs and discounts available, so you can determine which plan delivers the best value for your needs and lifestyle.

If you wish, you can also manually convert your Innovative Plan G into a regular Plan G during the first two years, but when you manually convert your supplement, your premium will increase.

Service Area and Availability of Medicare Supplement Plans

Not all Medicare Supplement plans are available everywhere, and the service area can differ significantly from one insurance company to another. For instance, Physicians Mutual offers its Medicare Supplement plans in 30 states plus Washington, D.C., while other companies may have a more limited reach. This means that the Medigap plan you want, or the innovative features you’re interested in may not be available in your state just yet.

It’s important to check which Medicare Supplement plans are offered in your area and to compare the benefits and costs from different insurance companies. Some states, like Massachusetts, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, have their own unique Medigap standardization systems, which can affect the types of plans and benefits available. To determine the best plan for your needs, you can visit the official Medicare.gov website or consult with a licensed insurance agent who understands the local market. By doing your homework, you’ll ensure you get the coverage and service you need, wherever you live.

Preventive Care and Wellness in Medicare Supplement

One of the most valuable features to look for in a Medicare Supplement Insurance plan is preventive care benefits. While Original Medicare covers many preventive services, some Medigap plans, like those from Physicians Life, go a step further by including additional preventive care benefits. These can cover routine physical exams, immunizations, and health screenings that aren’t fully paid for by Medicare, helping you stay proactive about your health.

Investing in a Medigap plan with strong preventive care benefits can make a real difference in your long-term wellness. By catching health issues early and staying on top of recommended screenings, you can reduce your risk of chronic conditions and avoid costly medical services down the road. When you compare Medigap plans, be sure to look at the preventive care benefits offered and choose a plan that supports your health goals. Not only can this help you save on out-of-pocket costs, but it also empowers you to take charge of your health and enjoy a better quality of life throughout your retirement.

    Why I Made the Switch

For me, it came down to long-term value and stability. I’m not looking for the cheapest plan today, I’m looking for protection from sudden, drastic price increases later. I don’t like surprises. Paying for a stable plan now can help avoid higher costs down the road.

    Here’s what stood out:

    • 50+ years of Medicare experience

    • A+ rating with Weiss and AM Best

    • Honest approach to pricing, not “bait and switch” tactics

    • Strong preventive care benefits that support longevity and wellness

    • Some discounts may be available based on age or the age of household members

Switching plans can sometimes require medical underwriting, but certain options may allow you to switch without it, especially within the first two years.

And if you’re wondering, I purchased the standard Plan G in Florida, with plans to convert to the Innovative Plan G once it becomes available in my state.

We often recommend pairing the Innovative Plan G with supplemental indemnity and cancer insurance plans to help cover potential gaps. This approach allows you to manage your healthcare risks effectively without overspending on premiums. You can also compare plan options, including Medigap plan benefits and Medicare Advantage Plans, to find the best fit for your needs and budget.

No worries. You can start with the regular Plan G or Plan N and later transition to the Innovative Plan G when it becomes available in your area, ensuring continuous coverage tailored to your needs. Eligibility for certain plans may depend on when you became eligible for Medicare. Regardless of the plan, Medicare pays for approved services, and Medigap plans help cover costs for skilled nursing facility care and hospice care coinsurance.

No, we are independent brokers. My decision to choose Physicians Mutual’s Plan G is based solely on what works best for me—not influenced by commissions or affiliations. All Medigap policies must cover the Medicare approved amount for covered services, including Part B and Medicare Part B expenses. Medigap plans help pay costs not fully covered by Medicare approved expenses.
